The TABE Reading section tests your ability to identify an author's tone, which is the author's attitude or feeling toward the subject they are writing about. Tone is conveyed through word choice and style and can be positive, negative, neutral, or a mix of emotions.
To figure out the tone of a passage, pay close attention to the author's word choice, also known as diction. Words have a connotation (an emotional association) in addition to their literal meaning.
Positive Tone: Look for words that have a positive or uplifting connotation.
Example: Words like joyful, exhilarating, delightful, or hopeful create a positive tone.
Negative Tone: Look for words that have a negative or critical connotation.
Example: Words like harsh, dreary, disappointing, or unfortunate create a negative tone.
Neutral Tone: The author presents facts without expressing an opinion. This is common in academic or informational texts.
Example: Words like states, explains, describes, or reports suggest a neutral tone.
Humorous Tone: The author uses funny or clever language to entertain the reader. 😜
Serious Tone: The author uses formal, grave language to discuss a weighty topic.
On the TABE, you'll be asked to read a passage and then choose the best word that describes the author's tone, such as critical, admiring, informative, or sarcastic.
