The TABE (Tests of Adult Basic Education) Reading section includes questions on figurative language. This tests your ability to go beyond the literal meaning of words and understand the deeper, often creative, meaning that authors use to make their writing more interesting and vivid.
Simile: A comparison between two different things using the words "like" or "as."
Example: The runner was as fast as a cheetah.
Metaphor: A direct comparison between two things without using "like" or "as." It states that one thing is another.
Example: The world is a stage.
Personification: Giving human qualities or actions to inanimate objects or abstract ideas.
Example: The wind whispered through the trees.
Hyperbole: An exaggeration used for emphasis or effect.
Example: I've told you a million times!
Idiom: A phrase or expression whose meaning cannot be understood from the ordinary meanings of the words in it.
Example: "Break a leg" means good luck. 🍀
On the TABE, you'll be asked to read a short passage and identify the type of figurative language used, or explain its meaning in the context of the passage.
